Mount Lookout is an affluent residential neighborhood on the east side of Cincinnati, southeast of Hyde Park and west of Linwood.
like Hyde Park, i don’t have much to say about Mount Lookout. it’s an affluent neighborhood and has remained that way for a long time. originally called Delta, it was renamed to Mount Lookout when the Cincinnati Observatory moved to the neighborhood from its former location in Mount Adams. most of the land in the neighborhood was originally used as a vineyard before it was developed.
like Hyde Park, Mount Lookout also has a popular shopping district that has remained popular throughout the years. named Mount Lookout Square, it’s located at the confluence of Delta and Linwood Avenue and has a lot of history. Zip’s Cafe is a burger place in the square that has existed in the same spot for 93 years. It was even formerly known as a place people could go to place illegal bets on horse races. The Redmoor is a former theater at the other end of the square, built on land that used to be part of a sheep farm. similar to Bogart’s in Corryville, The Redmoor started out as a theater and underwent several rebirths to stay current in the times and become the event center it is today.
the funniest thing to me about the neighborhood is that for a long time, Hyde Park and Mount Lookout were in a turf war over which neighborhood Ault Park was actually located in. some time ago the city clarified neighborhood boundaries and officially determined Ault Park to be in Mount Lookout. Many Hyde Park residents were upset about the decision and claimed the city was unfairly harming the neighborhood.
